I think it's important to bring up breastfeeding in all the classes at
appropriate times. For instance, in the newborn class, describing what
hospital routines to expect after baby is born, I will say that once we know
baby is OK, our first priority is to get baby to breast, etc. The
nutritionist who speaks at the "early bird" class talks about advantages of
breastfeeding, mentions how fat stores laid down during pregnancy insure
reserves for making breastmilk, etc. We also have an infant feeding class,
which touches on some bottlefeeding issues, but is mostly about breastfeeding.
But the way we get people to all these classes is that they are free and that
they have to take them before they enroll in the childbirth series. We get
good attendance. Miriam
