sorry to say, on this side of the pond also, where around the beltway this
term is known to mean:

manipulating the data to remove that which would be detrimental to the
desired outcome.

so, not exactly a lie, just "sorta", or not completely the truth, or a
version of someone's truth, like the answers given by a politician down the
road, who found himself in some mighty deep hot pond water after getting a
massage.
