When my daughter was born 18 years ago in Bangkok, Thailand, I was required
to list my formula preference when I registered at the hospital to give
birth- even though they knew that I was going to breastfeed. I never used
the formula, but was sent home with a free tin- which I threw out. Things
have changed a great deal in Thailand since then.

Fifteen years ago when my son was born in America I was harrassed by one of
the OB nurses for sending abck the bottles of sterile water unopened. They
didn't know what to do when I refused the free formula pack. So I took the
pack- it made a cute purse for my daughter- and threw the formula away in
the hospital trash bin.

Twelve years ago when my sone was born in Norway, he was put to the breast
immeadiatly (even though he was a cesarean). There was never any mention of
formula or bottles and I didn't get any free samples of anything to take home.

Nine years ago when another son was born in the same US hospital as the
first son, I was harrassed by some of the nurses for having a VBAC and
putting my son and myself at risk. (When he was 14 month old he and I were
on CNN being interveiwed about the ACOGs new guidlines concerning VBAC). I
was again told that I *had to* take home the free ABM. I left it in the
trash bin.

Five years ago, when my last baby was born in Hong Kong, even though I was
the only breasfeeding mother in the hospital, nobody EVER offered or
suggested ABM and I did not see any free samples.

I can't believe that we are still hearing about the same ODL battles in the
US after all these years! Don't know what the answer is, I'm just amazed!
