My son is tube fed, he has a variety of health problems including the
fact that he cannot tolerate hardly any formula and had to finally go to
one that costs 350 per case. I breastfed for one year and then continued
to add it to his feeds and breastfeed here and there until he bit me so
severely I feared he might sever my nipple. He has severe cerebral palsy
and a very clonic bite. Any way, I fought the gastroenterologists about
the feedings of formula vs. breastmilk for over a year. Thankfully he
got breastmilk only for at least 9 months and then a mix but
unfortunately he was failure to thrive. If I knew then what i know now,
I would have insisted on breastfeeding him as long as possible while
wearing a supplementer with whatever the supplement du jour was at the
time. I believe their biggest problem with allowing breastmilk to be
part of the feedings was that they could not calculate the calories and
that they could not properly track calorie intake vs. growth. An
additional problem was that he would breastfeed easily but absolutely
refused a bottle thus he had to start NG feeds with high calorie formula.
I know that it is frustrating but i believe as a mother YOU have a say
in what is best for your son, and how his feedings or any other medical
procedure or care should go. I would INSIST that breast milk be included
in the feedings. How do they do it for preemies that get breastmilk
mixed with a high calorie supplement? If this nutritionist cannot do it,
they need to find one that will. I now have a 3 year old and soon to
adopt a 5 month old. I still give my 10 year old breastmilk (in his
tube) when he is sick and I have seen the wonderful health benefits! He
always gets better immediately.
I hope you solve this dilemma soon and to your sons benefit,
JP Bonner
