Subject: Re: small increase in the number of Irish women breastfeeding

Great stats from Ireland (apart from the rise in sections)....thanks
for posting, Kathleen.

What do you think has helped the rise in bf?

Is maintenance of bf improved?

Hi Heather,

I am an IBCLC based in the US, so I don't really have any answers to your
questions. Is there anyone on the list from Ireland who could comment?

I did read on the irishhealth.com website that in June 2001, Maureen Fallon
(no relation as far as I know) was appointed as the first breastfeeding
coordinator to advise on the effectiveness of breastfeeding policy.

One of the targets of the 1994 national breastfeeding policy for Ireland was
that all maternity hospitals would maintain their own data on breastfeeding
mothers. However a survey carried out in 2000 by Cuidiu, the Irish Childbirth
Trust, found that 'only a few hospitals have computer systems in place to
correct accurate data.' One of Ms Fallon's duties will be to oversee the
collection of this data. Ireland currently has one of the lowest
breastfeeding rates in Europe.
