Hi All,

Permission to post: Mom has 4 month old baby. #2. Initially mom had a
great milk supply all was well. Now, Mom reports that her milk supply is
suddenly drying up. This happened with her first baby around the same time
and her mother and sister had the same issue with their babies. Baby’s wt
gain was within normal range until he was 2 months old then dropped in gain
by ½. (was gaining 1.4oz per day then dropped to .6zo per day) I charted
the weights myself. She reports no meds of any kind, so anti-galactogogue
herbs, no pregnancy. I did a visit and baby took 2 oz at breast with a
sleepy nursing – beautiful latch, positioning fine – all looked fine. Baby
would not let me do a suck eval preferring to chew on my finger and play
with it rather than suck. :-)

Mom rented a scale and did pre/post wts all night – called this morning in a
panic. Baby only took 4 oz from breast total all night. NOT good. I told
her to supplement now. I am going back this afternoon to work with her with
an SNS to see if we can continue to feed baby at breast – he flat out
refuses a bottle. I know it may be ‘iffy’ to get a 4 month old to nurse
with an SNS… Baby looks great however. All of this started last Thursday –
mom said she felt breasts were full Thursday morning then by that evening
they didn’t feel the way they normally feel – they felt empty and baby was
not satisfied.

My questions to you are: What am I missing? Why is it that some women’s
milk supplies seem to dry up like this without any apparent reason? Anyone
else deal with this one??

All input greatly appreciated!

Warmly,

Jaye
