Evi, we only have one manufacturer of formula in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has
ratified the WHO Code and I am reliably informed that it passed its own Code
on lst August (haven't seen it yet). We have no media advertising of
formula at all (no TV, radio, newspaper ads). Formula manufacturers are
only permitted to talk about formula to the head office staff at Ministry of
Health or City Health, i e no contact with mothers or nursing staff at all.
Even donations of formula for very special individual cases (triplets,
orphans) are made through admin staff and not direct to mothers themselves.
Hospitals buy any formula required at not less than 80% of the retail cost.
It must be hard trying to sell formula in this country. But somehow, they
manage it! Weaning foods (cereals and such) are blatantly advertised as the
manufacturer contends that these fall outside the scope of the Code. There
will be a six-month grace period until our Code (which includes weaning
foods) comes into effect and then a $5 OOO fine for each violation. Now
we're just waiting to see how this will be enforced!

Pam, Zimbabwe
