Have worked with several moms with thyroidectomies or total thyroid
ablation by x-radiation. As long as they are on sufficient synthroid or
whatever thyroid replacement they are on, milk supply does not usually
suffer.

The jury is still out on the latest mom, who is a cancer survivor, and
had xray tx to her chest, her thyroid ablated, and has a micrognathic
baby.

Lisa Marasco's research on PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has led her
to believe that adequate levels of thyroid hormones are important in
breast development and in maintenance of milk supply. As long as the
mom was well in the normal range on replacement meds, she should do
okay. Moms who are just borderline might have failed to develop
adequate glandular tissue, or may have inadequate thyroxine to drive
milk production.
