Mixing formula with human milk in the same container should probably be looked at regarding whether this is a term or preterm infant and what the goal is of doing such a thing. Mixing standard formulas with human milk in the same conatiner can neutralize some of the anti-infective properties of the milk. For full term healthy babies when this is done once in awhile this is probably not as much of an issue. When done for a preterm infant it increases the chances that some disease protective factors will be affected. Mixing neocate with human milk post discharge to cause the baby to gain weight is an off label use of a product that is not sterile, placed into human milk that is rendered less capable of destroting bacteria because of the iron in the powdered formula. Newer research is also starting to show that this obsession with causing post discharge preterm infants to catch up in weight gain is contributing to later overweight and obesity.
