Recent edition of Contempory Pediatrics, Vol.22, No.5 has a POEM (Patient Oriented Evidence that Matters) page which does a quick overview of tongue-tie effecting breastfeeding. Unfortunately, their conclusion is that tongue-tie has minimal effect on breastfeeding success. In reality, their study showed no significant difference in success between babies with ATLFF scores and the control infants. I believe, as practitioners, we all know the scores are really not an indication of problems with breastfeeding or not.

Beware that this information will only set back the idea of treating tongue-ties to enhance breastfeeding.
