I suppose the same brush could be used to paint OB nurses, grandmothers,
doctors, a lot of people.

That's why it is so important for us to offer information, instead of
advice. The mother can pick and choose from information (especially if our
information is backed up with good examples, research, whatever), instead of
"having to follow" advice given from whomever has the good intentions.

Best wishes,
Sam
Who got a chance to see my "first doula baby" play a solo in a school
concert a few weeks ago, and ironically, whose brother was my "first League
baby" from Marietta!

<<Dear Friends:

As a LC in private practice, I have had contact with doulas.

In the US, doulas evolved to fill a void; laboring women need someone just
for them to provide comfort and solace during labor. Nurses have become
unable to do that, for the most part, once medicine went corporate in the US
in the late 80s-early 90s. Doulas are passionate advocates for women's
ability to birth and breastfeed.

Once in a great while, a doula has been obstructive to lactation
management. >>
