Nikki,

In the Medela pumps if a mom has an OMER there is the possibility that the
milk will get into the tubing (just as one local mom discovered when she
couldn't figure out why in the hospital the Classic stopped working - she
had OMER, the milk got into the tubing, then onto the filter, then you know
what happens when the Classic filter gets wet, it no longer lets the air
flow through). Since there is milk in the tubing, the tubing needs to get
washed, and since they are sterilizing the washed pump parts, tubing gets
sterilized (and occassionally melted).
