Dear Lactnetters:
There was a breastfeeding workshop here in Kansas City about 2 years ago (I
didn't attend) where the speaker referenced a study done on nipple confusion.
I cannot remember the exact name of the report but it stated that there was
no such animal as nipple confusion. My partner did attend the meeting and
said that the report was not a peer reviewed study (I will have to check w/
her on the name). Unfortunately, a few of our pediatricians and staff nurses
attended the meeting and we breastfeeding supporters have been dealing w/ the
fallout ever since. Any folks from the Kansas City area out there attend
this meeting? You may be able to give more insight than I.
I usually discuss avoiding artificial nipples until breastfeeding is well
established as we don't know which babies will develop a preference to the
artificial nipples. Some babies are very accommodating and some aren't so
best to avoid the problem until baby has developed it's skills.
My $. 02.
