Thank you, Rachel, for touching on a subject I have been curious about. I
started my "N" boycott in the late seventies and have been consistent with
avoiding their grocery products, hotels etc. (as the mom of a 6 year old,
their product tie in with the movies Lion King and Pocahontas have made my
life a bit tricky!) I would appreciate ANY information that anyone can offer
regarding the current status of this particular company. PLEASE E-MAIL ME
PRIVATELY SO AS NOT TO TAKE UP LACTNET SPACE. : )
I have spent greater than a dozen summer vacations, with my maternal
grandmother, in Honduras and Guatemala and I am VERY sensitive to the issues
of exploitation, of any kind, by "first world" countries in the third world.
Many comapanies "dump" products in third world countries, that have
unacceptable standards here. This can range from pesticides that have been
banned here to food products that don't meet our standards. Not harmful in a
health-sense, just poor quality. An example is a U.S. company, marketing
colored sugar water as apple juice. Guess where those lots wound up after
the juice content was uncovered, and the FDA began it's investigation?!
On a more positive Lactnet note - during my most recent visit to Honduras, 3
or so years ago, I was very pleased to see a very strong presence with the
promotion of breastfeeding. One of my cousins is a regional coordinator and
they encourage and support mothers to serve as role models and encourage new
moms to breastfeed. As I understand it, the goverment health department
gives the program $$$ support and a "green light".
Whew!!! I'm done.
