I was asked to visit a mom whose baby had been in NICU, then discharged,
then found to have a bowel obstruction, had surgery then was finally
released at 4 weeks (baby had been 34 weeks gestation). During that time
the hospital had allowed her to use their White River pump while in the
hospital TWICE and no one had shown her how to use it. Upon discharge and
subsequent re-hospitalization, she had tried to use one she had rented to
maintain her milk supply with little success. She assumed this was due to
stress. However, she was referred to my agency for Public Health Nursing
visit, and I went along.

1. Mom was not given instructions on how to use the breast shell of the
White river pump, which requires it to be inverted before placing on the
breast, I understand? Her nipples were so sore it was painful to try to
breastfeed the baby.

2.The pump she had at home was NOT the pump I knew but a Model Number 9600
- much smaller, but the rent was very high...

Has anyone seen this pump? Tested it? Found it adequate? Are there any
"tricks" I need to know about it? I don't rent pumps, but know the Medela
and the Ameda/Egnell - Hollister well.
