Nikki said,

<<It is so difficult to work in a field where the baby is considered the
enemy, some wicked manipulator, or something to be controlled.>>

Oh Nikki, you've hit the nail on the head. There are so very many mothers
that view their babies like this. The mom I saw today brought up the "using me
as a pacifier" and "she's gotta stop snacking" and "I don't want her in my bed
because I don't sleep well," and "She won't sleep unless one of us holds
her."

I feel as though so many of us in our generation are trying to correct the
mistakes we made and that our mothers made. I know I am....how I wish I knew 29
years ago what I know now.... All I can hope is that my three children will
parent the way I wish I had parented.... But MY dear mother told me that my
baby was manipulative, and just crying to get her own way (at 6 days???).

How long is it going to take to get the right message across?

Sigh.

And I too am thankful for Lactnet, for many women (and men) across many
countries that share so many of my values -- for things that we can talk about, for
the wisdom that is given freely by some of the wisest women in lactation!

So a heartfelt thank you to Kathleen Bruce and Kathy Auerbach for having the
foresight to start this listserv back in 1995 -- and for all the list moms
that are keeping the home fires burning.

Happy Thanksgiving one and all!

Jan Barger -- who is very thankful to have her children around her for the
holiday. Once they are grown, you are never quite sure from year to year if
they are going to be able to come home, so you treasure each and every holiday
you are together.
