Hello all,
I'm trying to understand a situation that has arisen in a hospital NICU.
From everything I've read and heard, Hepatitis C is not a contraindication to
breastfeeding. The only exception that I know of is when the mother is sick
from her Hepatitis C - &/or has a high viremic level.
The situation is this:
baby born preterm,
Mom Hep C positive but not active disease.
Mom pumping for preterm baby in NICU.
Neonatologists say baby cannot get her milk or be breastfed because of the
Hep. C.
The Doctors involved have been given the CDC recommendations as well as Dr.
Hale's book's overview and this has not changed the plan.
My question is whether anyone knows if there are different considerations for
a preterm baby or a baby in the hospital setting or anything else that is
being missed here.
Thanks in advance --
Lori
(leaving city and credentials off this time because of the touchiness of this
case right now)
