The new AAP Statement on Breastfeeding is amazing! First it discusses how
we are doing better at initiation, but shows that duration and exclusivity
are poor. Then 2 1/2 pages of how BF babies do better medically
(infections etc.)1/2 page of maternal benefits, then economic benefits.
Discusses duration and exclusivity and a few contraindications. Promotes 10
steps and how hospitals aren't meeting 10 steps . Then pacifier use AFTER
BF well established. Vit and mineral supplements noted. Then a nice
discussion on growth and CDC says use WHO charts and why. Discussion on ped
role and why it is important, stresses the early visit (48-72 hours after
discharge) and where peds can get current info and how important ped support
is psycholoigally to mom. Then discusses business case for BF. 151
references.

The very best part is in the last paragraph! " Thus, infant feeding should
not be considered a lifestyle choice but rather as a basic health issue."
!!!!!!!!!

Wow, hoping peds and hospitals read this and take action!!! Pat in SNJ
