Help! I had a particularly ugly confrontation this week with one of our
OB/GYNs who is very anit-BF. He had delivered a baby by forceps, who, at 12
hours of life, had the usual lack of suck and a mushy head. I had been on my
knees for 30 minutes with the baby skin to skin and trying to explain to the
mother why her baby didn't want to eat. The doctor walked in as I was saying
"with forceps the baby doesn't suck well for the first 24 hours because they
have headache". He immediately demanded to know if this statement was
research based and wanted me to get him a printout of research linking
forceps use to poor breastfeeding. We know as LC's that forceps DO impact BF
success and the suck urge. Can anyone help me out with any research articles
to prove my point. I am afraid that anecdotal evidence gets nowhere with
this fellow.

If I met any of you at the lactation research conference here in Amarillo,
Texas (my hometown)...it was a pleasure. Hope to see lots more of you there
next October--that was one dynamic learning opportunity!

Thanks, Tiffany Bateman
