It was decades ago - but I can still remember the pain - in fact, it was
one reason I called LLLI Medical Advisors!

Alex had 3 teeth at 3 months and from then on a tooth a month!

We had various times when the cuts were so deep and pulled open with each
latch, once I had to stop breastfeeding for a weekend and hand express (no
good pumps then - and in fact, I don't think they would have been helpful -
hand expressing allowed me to have NO pressure on the tissue while it
knitted together).

As for what do I suggest to moms so they DON'T get to the point I got to:

Stay alert during the breastfeeding - none of that "dozing" while
breastfeeding - as soon as baby is no longer nursing for food - be VERY
aware and get the finger near the mouth so you can quickly insert it and
remove the baby if he is starting to bite. (But babies still need to be
able to "hang out", so I didn't stop the breastfeeding unless there were
signs that biting was about to occur - you get very good at recognizing
when the tongue is no longer over the lower teeth!)
If biting occurs - STOP the breastfeeding and don't give it back right away
(remember babies have very short attention spans, so I'm not talking about
HOURS but rather MINUTES..)
If baby is biting hard and does not let go - pull him in - obstructing the
nose will cause them to let go (this as a last resort, but it WAS necessary
once)
DO NOT bite back or hit, but don't feel guilty if you do move more abruptly
than you normally would...it HURTS!

I used breast milk and Vitamin E (accepted at the time, not now), so now I
recommend Lansinoh or Pure Lan to reduce the risk of developing scabs -
which only take longer to heal - and watch the cut for signs of bacterial
or fungal problems (delayed healing) in which case Dr. Newman's APNO cream
may be appropriate.

After a few weeks, Alex learned that if he bit, food was taken away - so by
5 months I did not have any more problems...
