Lactation is a separate field of study. No different than a dietician,
radiologist, physcial therapist all these require medical certification, and
or state approval.
All do not require a subtitle to qualify for a job. Why is it I need RN
after my IBCLC to be considered for a hospital lactation job.? Has the
lactation field not yet been recognized and accepted as it's own specialty
field?
As lactation consultants what field of study are we practicing under? When
you attend a univserity and a school of study you are working to attain a
cerificate, an associated degree, a BS degree and a Master of your field. My
question is how can we establish this in our lactation profession?
Most North Carolina Hospitals, will not consider your application for
employment unless you hold an RN degree along with your IBCLC certification.
Hospitals want an applicant that has attended a structured universal course
of supervised study.
I am enrolled in an associate degree of nursing program. In our nursing
program, clinical days are supervised hands on days. Currently my rotation
is nursing home and assisted living clinicals. All experience is helpful and
good. But I'm not practising lactation. I should be studing overcoming
difficulty: in infant feeding. Breast augmentation, milk supply and its
effects on breastfeeding. NICU breastfeeding care. We have our wise
Grandmothers and Godmothers in lactation, and our professionsal organization
ILCA, all their wisdom can develope a course of study in Lactation. We have
the IBCLC to administer testing. As in all university settings students,
could apply for financial aid to continue their education and studies.
