I have a client from a childbirth class who has Right- sided weakness in her
arm & shoulder and had surgery "under" ( her words) her Left br. to remove a
severly damaged lung & spleen from an auto accident. She was not going to
breastfeed because she thought her br. tissue had been to damaged to produce
any milk. After talking about breastfeeding in class she and I discussed her
situation. This is what I found out-
1. There was no incision around the areola or breast tissue.
2. She has had changes in her breasts during her pregnancy, more so in the R
than L.
3. She has noticed colostrum in both.
4. She is concerned about being able to position baby at the breast due to
her R-sided weakness.
I asked her to call her surgeon and inquire about the surgery. Then talk with
her OB. We also discussed nursing only with one breast, the ?? of the L
breast producing milk at a lower volume & using a sling and pillows to
support. I would appreciate any and all insights from those of you who have
worked with moms who are challenged in this way.
