as an aside, let me point out that encouraging breastfeeding in the first
hour of life does NOT mean such things as my patients have experienced, for
example:

forcing baby's head onto breast repeatedly in an attempt to force baby to
nurse
forcing baby's mouth open, same reason as above
dribbling formula on mother's nipple to "entice" baby to nurse (okay, this
one still makes me scream)
doing tests, eye drops, shots, etc., then putting baby to breast at end of
first hour, okay, technically, it is within the first hour, but still
taking baby away from the mother for many hours because bf was attempted
during first hour "now mother needs her rest and baby won't nurse anyway."
why is this the same baby who then somehow needs a bottle of ABM and a
pacifier when in the nursery?

trying not to be pessimistic about such things in denver, CO

oh, i forgot - new patient with IVF pregnancy was told by half the LCs and
doctors she consulted that she would not be able to breastfeed, and by the
other half that she could. i asked her why she had IVF - reasons that should
not impinge upon breastfeeding at all. none of the other so-called experts
she had consulted had asked her this question - they all based their answers
simply on the IVF. duh!
