Hi all,
I have a client who had a sub mucosal TT clipped at 1 1/2 weeks because the
baby was not transferring milk at the breast. Within a day after the clip,
the baby got severely congested, and had allot of trouble coordinating the
suck/swallow breathe. The mom felt that the congestion was in direct
relation to the feeds, i.e. immediately afterwards, much worse. Another LC
saw the baby and recommended immediate evaluation by an ENT.
He checked baby and said all was normal, and the congestion would go away on
its own. Within 3 weeks, the congestion totally disappeared. The baby
continued to not transfer any milk at breast. Otherwise, very healthy and
thriving. He is eating all feeds of pumped milk by bottle.
Baby is now 8 weeks old.
At suggestion of other LC's, mom had another clip done, as baby was still
not lifting tongue well, and not BF.
Within 7 hours of second clip, baby again got severely congested, including
mucous from eyes and deep in nose and running. He almost could not eat the
first 24 hours because of pain and stuffiness, and now 3 days later, the
baby is still miserable because he cannot breathe freely, and keeps waking
himself up in sleep. The mom suspected the congestion was related to the
clipping the first time, but now she is convinced.
Has anyone ever heard of this? What is the connection between this severe
congestion and the TT. Mom is at her wits end, and feeling very frustrated
that she went ahead with the second clipping. The only connection I can
think of is that if the baby is not properly moving his tongue due to pain
from having it clipped or some sort of release from restriction, he is not
clearing fluids as he should, therefore causing the congestion.
Please email privately as well as to the list.
