Hi All,
Thought you might be interested in the outcome of the B-strep positive mom
with PROM (48 hours), whose baby was put on npo. Poor baby was npo (nothing
by mouth) for 4 days, despite both blood cultures (24 and 48 hrs) being
NEGATIVE. She was given 4 abdominal xrays and an upper gi series, all because
she spit up a little after her second bf. Mom was about to burp her when
informed that she must be returned to the isolette immediately for change of
shift. No burp, good feeding, of course she spit a small amount of colostrum,
which was interpreted by the bf ignorant resident as mucous. The ball rolled
from there. Mom was finally allowed to resume feeding yesterday, and baby
will be home tomorrow, when she is done with the course of antibiotics. (Yes,
we know they should have been discontinued after the cultures came back
negative). If she were my kid she would have been signed out AMA. I would
have gone to my ped for antibiotic injections, or to another hospital. AARGH!
 Irate comments welcomed.
