i am working w/ a young mother of a newborn infant (3 wks) and 3 other small
children. i have her permission to post. she gave birth at the hosp i
volunteer for and then moved out of state (from michigan to florida) and still
contacts me via email for help.

she was unsuccessful at bfing her previous children and i recall that she had
a very strong urge to get them off formula and onto straight soymilk at about
6 mos. i thought i went over thoroughly why this was a bad idea but i guess
not b/c she just emailed me that she is now giving it to her 3 wk old son !

she has recurrent bouts of thrush and mastitis as well as a 'double nipple'
on her right breast. this is the most afflicted breast due to baby never being
able to get a very good latch. i've tried my best to help her w/ these
problems via email to little avail. she is now in too much pain to continue putting
baby to breast and says she doesn't get enough for him when she pumps. she says
she bought him formula but he refuses it. her stated goal is to supplement
just for a few days while her nipples and breasts heal and then put him back to
breast.

however, hearing her news tonight about the soymilk has rendered me
positively agog w/ concern. she thinks soymilk is a wonder health food. i am
researching specific info about why it's not fit food for an infant even as i post to
lactnet, but i am desperate for quick, accurate and specific info i can get to
her and thought of all the knowledgeable ppl here...
i'd love to be able to tell her exactly why and how it's not good for him &
what the consequences to him could be if she continues. any responses would be
greatly appreciated.
ps - she is near orlando, if i also had an LC or bfing volunteer she could
contact, that would be wonderful!
