My only problem with this kind of research that "proves" that LBW babies
"can't" bf fully until 6-8 weeks of age is the way breastfeeding is
managed.  Yes, preterm infants have special needs.  But if they are
allowed enough skin to skin and breastfed very frequently, many of them
CAN sustain themselves at breast.  I think the technology is good when
it's really needed, but I think it is often a substitute for a true
understanding of and accomodation to the needs of a LBW infant in our
culture.

I've assisted infants as young as 34 weeks ga/ (3.5 lb) to fully and
exclusively breastfeed and thrive.  Of course, these are the healthy
infants with uncomplicated perinatal courses, the little ones with
issues do require more support.
