I am NOT speaking to the Joan Wolf comments on La Leche League - although, as a Leader who has been one in 6 different states since 1975, I can think of only ONE Leader that I have met who would have made me NOT return to a League meeting... And yes, moms continue to come to my groups when they have weaned and even when they are exclusively formula-feeding, because of the parenting philosophy they hear discussed at meetings.

HOWEVER, the topic I want to bring up is addressed to those of you who will be asked, due to your expertise, to help a hospital meet The Joint Commission's requirements of "exclusive breast milk feeding". I just completed such a presentation (based on the US BF Committee Toolkit: http://www.usbreastfeeding.org/HealthCareSystem/HospitalMaternityCenterPractices/ToolkitImplementingTJCCoreMeasure/tabid/184/Default.aspx) and would be willing to share what I did/said so that you can edit/change it as you wish...as long as you're also willing to share BACK what you have changed/done! I would like to eventually post it on the California Department of Public Health's website (http://cdph.ca.gov/breastfeeding), so don't share with me what you're not willing to have posted! <grin>

The night before the presentation (3 am, you can tell who is WAY PAST "middle age" here), I suddenly woke up and realized that I had provided them with information about how to meet the requirement - but NO "anticipatory guidance" that, as an IBCLC I SHOULD be providing, about "unintended consequences" of concentrating on "breast milk feeding" - which I think should be changed to "human milk feeding" instead of "breastfeeding".

I added such a slide, and it DID evoke some interesting dialogue with the OBs.

I would encourage those of you who have the opportunity to speak to hospitals staff to remember that there IS a difference between these two - NOT to criticize/diminish the mothers who "human milk feed" but to keep in mind that WE, health care professionals, should be promoting/protecting/supporting "breastfeeding" - and even when "human milk feeding" is necessary, the goal should be to, whenever possible, help the mother achieve "exclusive breastfeeding"...
