Even if you take the medella pump parts apart, the tiny area at the back of the pump where milk flows into the collection container is a bear to clean.  I was totally grossed out by mine at one point and ended up using gauze and a tiny knitting needle to get into that space.  Keep thinking pipe cleaners would be useful, but haven't tried.  Any other ideas.  I do use hot soapy water regularly.
