Dear Friends:
Ms Cotterman and Ms Riordan have written two lovely articles, evidence
based, with lots of physiology and good explanations. Their work is a testimony
to the creativity and adaptability of women!
We had best learn these methods to deal with waterlogged mothers. I don't
see any relief in sight, as long as national induction and epidural rates
continue to rise. The ones that need to be brought on board here are the
obstetricians. That will be a challenge because the obstetricians are not concerned
about lactation; their goal is to get the baby out, breathing, on a weekday.
I work with too many women who say, "My doctor will let me go a week past
my due date before he will induce me." Or, "You've been pregnant long enough,
just come in on Monday and we'll induce you." The women never question their
physicians, they don't refuse either. They show up, are induced, take an
epidural for the increased pain of induction and as a result are given way more
fluids and antidiuretic compounds than their bodies can excrete quickly. Then
they become terribly engorged and waterlogged and we, the lactation specialists,
have to deal with the aftermath.
    warmly,
