I have been to several conferences and I feel somewhat confused by the first
postpartum day and our new baby feeding. I work in a hospital setting. My
usual practice is the baby born evening after I had left for the day possibly
had 2 or more feedings before I see them (mom and babe) the next morning.
This baby is very sleepy. If I can get mom to keep her baby skin to skin he
sleeps very content with her. When he doesn't waken in 2-3 hours I ask her
to express drops of colostrum into a spoon and we give it to the baby until he
wakens and tries to latch. I try to observe a feeding so I can see and hear
swallows. I usually use a stethoscope because my hearing is poor (use hearing
aids). I have mom hear as well if she can't hear the baby swallow. I might get
one to two feedings before I leave at the end of my 8 hour day. My question
to those of you with many more years experience and knowledge. Am I
correct or is it necessary to wake these kids up. I just found that through my
past few years these babies do better on their own. I also have a high rate of
induction and c/s birth with epidurals plus stadol. These kids I am pretty
instanct that they get the drops of colostrum to help dilute the meds.
Email me privately if you wish.
