Jean,
I understand the feeling of being between a rock and a hard place. You
work with all these wonderful mothers, some of whom have an abundance of
milk and a generous spirit. You have a relative who is willing to try
anything that would bring him relief from colitis.

Informal sharing takes place every day, but it is between two people who
know each other and are comfortable doing so. If your relative had a
wife who was breastfeeding, or a sister, or a trusted friend, he might
discuss this unusual treatment plan with her. He would probably be very
interested in reading Lois Arnold's good articles in JHL, and other
publications from HMBANA (Human Milk Banking Association of North
America).

Remember that fresh milk, or fresh frozen, has a full and active supply
of immune properties, but pasteurized frozen milk retains most of these
values. It is still a good option if your relative does not have access
to a private source.

The milk banks in the U.S. vary from time to time in amounts of excess
milk. Thank you, Darlene for posting all the milk bank numbers this
weekend. Just to save you a phone call, the Mothers' Milk Bank at
Austin is just barely keeping up with the NICU demand at this time. You
do need a prescription to order the milk and you can call ahead to ask
about processing and shipping charges.

If your relative does give this a trial, think about writing it up for a
journal.
