Hello. This is my first post after lurking for a couple of years, so I'll
introduce myself. I am a maternal/child clinical nurse specialist and the
only IBCLC in our Level II hospital. I just took on this role in January
so we have lots to do to improve our lactation services. It's very
exciting but a little overwhelming, so I appreciate all of the information
I gain here. I was approached by one of our OB/GYNs today (a good sign)
and asked for advice on one of her patients. I don't have a complete
history since I have not seen the patient, and I will speak with the doctor
again tomorrow but I wanted to have some information ready. The patient
weaned in Sept. with her second child. Also breastfed first child, but I
don't know how long with either child. She presented at the clinic
yesterday with reports of diffuse burning pain in just one breast. She
reported that she also had this pain after weaning first child but not for
this long. I'm not sure if she has had this pain the whole time since
weaning, is a new development, or just getting worse. The dr. reports
nothing palpable, no discharge, no redness, nothing seen on mamogram or
ultrasound. I did search the archives, and looked in all of my reference
books but can't really find anthing for pain 6 months after weaning. The
dr. has tried antiinflamatory meds but no relief. Could this be yeast? Any
other thoughts would be appreciated.
