Hello again. Please let me clarify my previous post:

*My only contact with the mother was via her one call to me asking for
information yesterday afternoon. I have the flu and cannot see the baby.
I recommended that she locate and see a pediatrician for baby and also that
mother and baby see an LC as soon as possible. I also suggested that she
obtain a more effective pump. The urgency of this situation was clear to
me.
*I did discuss the possibility/probability that surgery is affecting milk
supply. Mom was very upset and I wanted to keep her optimistic, so I told
her that breastfeeding (at least partially) was still possible.
*Mother can hear swallowing and baby has alert periods.

Also,

*For those of you who read my post carefully and responded, thank you.

*(This is said gently and without ill intent) For those of you who wrote to
me as if I didn't know a thing: I do. I gave the mother all the
appropriate information for inadequate milk supply and failure to thrive
including the importance of feeding the baby, be it breastmilk or ABM.
I posted on Lactnet because I think there is more going on here than low
milk supply and inadequate intake caused by epidurals, breast surgery, poor
positioning and smoking. I wanted the medical insights many Lactnetters
have. Here is why:
*It IS possible for a breastfed baby to be constipated (not just skipping
bm's but actually constipated). There are rare conditions that can cause
this. I've had the opportunity to work with a nursing couple who had one!
Since then, I cannot assume that all is well medically for the baby. Like
the saying goes "Never say never".

*When I posted, I just listed the facts, not my opinions. I hope that
didn't make me appear unknowledgeable or unconcerned.
*I will call the mother soon to see if she has obtained proper medical and
lactation care and will let you know how she is faring. If you would like
to contact me, I'm still No Mail.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth
