Hi, Laurie and others: Sounds to me like, as someone else mentioned, a
billing issue. When you look at the billing sheet that's handed to you by
the doc as you exit the examine room at his office, you see that there are
various levels of visits he can check - they usually are labled low,
medium, or high complexity, and depending on which he has checked
determines how high your bill is. So you may be considered a low
complexity visit this time and a medium or high complexity visit the next
time, depending on the diagnosis and the amount of time the doc spends with
you. The only way I think this system would work with inpt billing, is if
each visit is billed after the mom has been seen by the LC, with that
particular visit's complexity being determined at the time by the LC. I
believe of those hospitals that separately bill for inpt lactation visits,
most tack a one time charge onto the room charge, or miscellaneous charge.
If this is the system your hospital currently uses, Laurie, it won't work.
Of course, having each separate visit billable makes the most sense and
compensates us the most fairly for our work, just like a dr visit. For
those of you in private practice using a superbill for charges takes into
account the complexity and amount of time spent on a visit, leading to
fairer compensation for your time.
Just my 2 cents.
