Dear Friends:
Summer asks about a formula for a mother with primary lactation failure,
without access to a milk bank (I assume).
The only formula I know that has any research backing it is the old
Carnation Good Start. A 5-year study by Chandra found that it had less allergic
manifestations than Isomil and Enfamil.........although more than human milk.
(Wouldn't you know that Nestle makes this one :-(
Wouldn't want to use powdered, as it isn't sterile and can carry
dangerous organisms, like enterobacter sakazaki. Soy is the wrong phyllum, and there
are concerns about phytoestrogen and other compounds. There is no research
supporting any benefit from the new formulae with the DHA/ARA additives (check
out Makrides study (Pediatrics 2000' 105:32-38);also Dr. Lucas published a
study finding no difference between supplemented and non-supplemented
formulae), so save some pennies.
The study that found high levels of cadmium (B had levels of cadmium
higher than the WHO acceptable daily level) in two cow's milk based formulae
didn't identify either of them, calling one A and the other B. Now that's a
shame.
Thank goodness this baby can get whatever mamma can make!
    warmly,
