I don't know for sure but it might be that "baby carrier" in the sentence
that you quoted might mean a soft fabric carrier and not a plastic
exo-skeleton.  Before the currently popular slings there were other
brands of soft fabric carriers that held the baby in a more upright
position against the chest.  Many are still on the market.  I used one of
these for my children (now 22 and 26) and still think that they have a
lot to offer- including a different weight distribution over the mother's
shoulders and back rather than on only one side.  The more upright
position is also good for GER and some very small babies.
