Cheryl suggests:
Just being aware of the potential helps to identify "all artificial
nipples"
as a potential cause instead of just bottles, and serves as a reminder
to
check and make sure they aren't using a pacifier.

I like to say it as: "If at all possible, nothing but mom in baby's
mouth while (s)he's learning how to nurse-not bottles, no pacifiers, no
fingers etc." My intent is to leave the door open just a crack for
those situations where something else might be used legitimately (e.g.
finger feeding). We go on to say that if mom does intend to introduce a
bottle, it is best to wait at least a month. (The percentage of moms
going back to work outside the home seems to be decreasing, but in those
situations, baby does need another delivery system when mom can't be
there.)

Interesting situation recently. I said exactly this to two moms in a
row. One immediately said to her husband. "She said we have to get rid
of the pacifier" while the other said "She said it's OK to give a
pacifier"!!!!
Goes to show you it's not always what you say, but how the other person
hears you.

Winnie
