I can certainly imagine how shocked you were when you saw her breast and
heard her story and how urgent you saw the situation was. However, unless
you speak directly to the other healthcare providers, you are only getting
one part of the story. Many of us have posted before on how mothers
selectively remember (not intentionally) or just do not process some of the
info they are getting. I would give the midwives the benefit of the doubt,
and call to report (with mom's permission) on mother's condition, and what
have they so far recommended and can they shed any light on the history etc.
You might find they had told her to see her doctor or some other good
advice. Maybe not, but maybe. In any case, it will be helpful for them to
know what you saw in person and how sick the mother was.
I personally have had mothers call our BF Center and, not realizing that I
was the one they had talked to before, say they were told such and such. It
is very easy for me to find their records, and I keep pretty good notes, and
see that 1 month ago we discussed likely reasons for low supply, for
example, and the offer of a (free) consultation was declined, and that mom
was told she could also see a bf specialist at WIC (US public health
programme), but decided not to go.
In any case, I am very glad the mom is now on the mend. Adversarial
situations will not be helpful to you nor the mothers in your area, so do
your best to stay collegial with the midwives, be open, you may their
comments eye-opening.
