Well what in the world would they use that's any different than for c-sections with general anesthesia? Our babies go straight to breast after those surgeries.

Just wondering...

Subject: does anesthesia require "pump and dump" for 24h?

In researching anesthesia for surgical procedures and "pumping and dumping" I saw a few posts from 2008 concerning anesthesia and breastfeeding. I didn't find the answer to my question specifically, however.\

I am currently trying to help a mom who is scheduled for laser surgery on Monday to break up a kidney stone. Her baby is 3 weeks old and he is exclusively breastfeeding (and very successfully). She originally called me last week about safety of medications used during the surgery. I told her to ask the doctor what is used and then we could look them up. Well, she just called me and her surgeon told her they have no idea what will be used, that it depends on the anesthesiologist. But they told her generally it is "pump and dump for 24 hours". She was not happy, obviously, because her baby is not a bottle feeder and she wants as little bottle feeding as possible.

Can anyone give me any insight? Do anyone know what is used generally? If I could xerox pages from Hale and give them to her, maybe it would help. I told her about the 5x the half life rule and also about Dr. Hale's website. Since we don't know the meds, though, its hard.

THanks for any insight you can give us.

Gracias,

Isabella
