Dear Lactnet,
I am posting for an IBCLC who has computer problems. She does not
elaborate, but it sounds like the mom is presently taking Valium (risk D).
What do you think? Anyone have experience with this? She says:
I'm working with a mom who is expecting twins, and really wants to
breastfeed. She has "restless leg" syndrome, and it is so severe that she
can't function during the day or sleep at night without taking valium. It
seems to be the only thing that works for her.
She is concerned about taking it during lactation, and when I looked it
up in Hale's book, he says that the shorter acting benzodiazepines (lorazepam
and alprazolam are safest during lactation provided their use is short-term
or intermittent, low dose, an after the first week of life.) What he doesn't
say is what the recomendations are if she needs to take it for extended
periods of time, and the fact that the babies will probably be premature
and/or small complicates the picture even more.
Thanks on her behalf,
Jan Ellen Brown IBCLC
Charlotte, NC
