Dear Wise Ones,
I need your help as I do not have access to my books while we are in
the process of moving.

I am looking for references to colostrum being part of the continuum
of milk production, rather than a completely separate substance. It is
my understanding that colostrum, aka early milk, starts to be produced
in early pregnancy and gradually changes to mature milk over the
course of the first couple of weeks after birth. I have also heard
colostrum described as concentrated milk.

I have searched the archives and come up with a great post from Carol
Brussel on 24 Oct 2000:

>if our understanding of the physiology of making breastmilk changes, i sure hope someone announces it in bigger letters so i can read it. i must have missed the moment when someone announced that colostrum is distinct from "breast milk." the last i heard there was colostrum in the milk for at least fourteen days, the proportions slowly changing to mature milk. and if there were a finite amount of colostrum in an individual mother's breast, then the baby who nursed a lot and whose mother used compression, would empty the
breast and therefore be starving until "the milk" came in.<

What I need is an actual citation from a text.
Anyone?

norma, grateful for this incredible resource.
