We have a baby here that has been diagnosed with Bells Palsy. Mom is pumping
and wants to nurse but the baby doesn't even keep good suction on a bottle or
pacifier. She roots opens wide but doesn't latch.
Dear Friends:
This situation requires the input of a OT or a speech/language
specialist, or a pediatric neurologist. It is not within the scope of practice of a
lactation professional.A baby that can't do what a normal baby should do needs
LOTS of help. The lactation professional can work with the mom to protect the
milk supply, and collect milk to feed to the baby while the other healthcare
professionals figure out what to do.
    warmly,
