My late father told me this story regarding his next in line brother,
the baby in the family of ten children in the early 1900's in Hungary.
My dad was born as next to the youngest, in 1914. His younger brother
was
born around 1917. My grandfather died while my grandmother was
pregnant with this youngest son, the 10th child.

My dad related that my "Uncle Sandy," his 'baby' brother, would stand
behind the kitchen door and crook a finger to his mother, my
grandmother, when he wanted to breastfeed, so that he could go to
sleep. This being her very last baby, she indulged him and he
apparently nursed until around 5 years of age. He's the only one still
living, lives in Canada and is about 83 years old now.

I've heard this same "come hither" story from some other oldtimers here
in the Pacific NW. I believe mothers have allowed child-led weaning
forever and just kept it a secret from persons outside of the family,
because of possible disapproval of such indulgence.
