The other way of looking at this is that it gives the new sister LOTS of
opportunities to develop self-esteem and learn mothering through the
kind of apprenticeship that is no longer readily available in North
American society. So, why couldn't this be an opportunity for the
daughter as well as the mother to grow and learn? Think of the
educational value of that girl's understanding of what is important.
"Yes, you can see that the baby loves to suck! If the baby sucks on the
breast, he will get lots of your mother's milk, and he needs to get that
all the time to grow. Besides, he likes to be close to your mother, and
hear her heartbeat. You can help tuck your mother in with the baby, and
get her some water when she is in bed with him..." etc.

This kind of situation is one of the most exciting for those of us who
are involved in community interpreting and settlement... imagine being
in the home of someone with different experiences and lifestyles, *and*
be able to participate in such an essential thing as breastfeeding and
family education.
