When I retook the exam under the study that was done several years back, I again had to document my hours. At that time I was a postpartum nurse who also happened to be IBCLC, but with no specific LC hours, so here's what I did: For 2 weeks I kept track of how much of my floor time was spent working in some way with breastfeeding-either directly with a patient or consulting with a staff member working with a mom. I then asked myself if that was a typical 2 weeks-if it hadn't been, I would have done it again. I then figured out the percentage of my total hours those hours working with breastfeeding came out to. Next I figured out how many "lactation hours" that came out to for the 2 weeks. Then I multiplied it by 26 (26 2-week periods in a year) minus weeks off for vacation or illness and came up with what I felt was a pretty solid number of countable hours in a year.
