"this doesn't mean that using the drug is wrong...the drugs do make a difference." I cannot agree or disagree with that statement in regard to the use of drugs for induced lactation because I have yet to see any studies that compared women who used drugs and women who didn't use drugs. One of my concerns is that in the early phases of lactation as well as during weaning, the cells junctures are more permeable than in any other time. I believe this would mean that if a drug is absorbed by the milk(dependent on the degree of protein binding and lipid solubility) then an infant may potentially get more of a drug than at any other time during lactation. Also, during the early phases of breastfeeding, we are dealing with a young infant. If we can induce lactation without medication, why use it?

While I agree with carol that mothers need to be better informed, I wonder how this can be done in some situations where some LC's may only have 10 minutes(?)to educate and help a mom with breastfeeding. The client to LC ratio in many areas gives the LC little time to fully educate the client. And sometimes, one may assume that one has educated the mother, only to find out later, that the mother did not understand what you said. Nor did the client read the material you gave her, because a)she threw it out, b)couldn't find it, c)toddler drew on it d) client says you never gave it to her. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
