Ladies,
I have permission to post from a mother P2/G1 who delivered vaginally 12
days ago and has yet to go through lactogenisis II. No breast changes during
pregnancy, normal shaped B cup breasts, not widely spaced, symmetrical.
Mom produced colostrum and milk is now white and thin. She never had any
breast fullness. She has been taking fenugreek since day 10 post partum and
has not seen any rise in production. She is putting baby to breast at each
feed (Q 3-4 hours) and supplementing with 2 oz of ABM. She is pumping Q 2 hrs.
Baby will latch and suckle (thank goodness!!) at each feed.
Prior to this pregnancy she had one pregnancy which resulted in miscarriage.
Prior to her first pregnancy she had no menses for five months, cause
undetermined. Had one thyroid test prior to either pregnancy which was not normal
but upon repeat testing 2 weeks later, normal results.
Mom saw her OB today and he is sure she does not have retained placenta but
does not feel like labs to look at prolactin and progesterone levels would be
"worth her time and money" as she is stimulating her nipples and breasts and
so her levels would be elevated anyway. (huh??)
Mom is very frustrated. We spoke about using a SNS or Lactaid, blessed
thistle, goats rue and the like but I am not sure that in light of her lack of
breast changes that an herbal remedy would be the course to take.
Mom wants an answer as to why this is happening because she wants to have
more children and wants to know if there is anything that can be done to change
the situation either for this baby or for subsequent children.
Any light you can shed on this would be helpful as I am over my head on this
in some aspects and there aren't any specialists in our area.
Thanks in advance.
