Anne,

Some questions for you:

1. Is the 100 pounds pre-pregnancy weight a healthy weight for this mother?
How tall is she? What is her ideal/goal weight? Is she 4'9" or 5'7"?

2. Has an RD done an extensive diet history and analyzed what she is
currently consuming? It's great that she's drinking one Ensure...but that's
only 250 calories and could theoretically be half of what she's eating.
Even with an extra 250 calories a day above maintenance needs, it would
still take 2 weeks to gain 1 pound on that Ensure alone (and Ensure's a
whole other topic <g>). I'm also wondering about the vitamin D
deficiency...was she diagnosed w/ rickets or ??? Is the doc on her case
about her calcium status?

3. I also wonder about the scoliosis. I have seen many orthopaedic
surgeons over the years for my own severe scoliosis (treated w/ surgery
years ago) and it was very interesting to hear one after the other tell me
that I needed to "stay trim" or "stay thin". Theoretically that would put
less stress on the spine and increase the patient's comfort level. I wonder
what messages she has been sent about her weight and how that all impacts
her current situation. The Methocarbamol also makes some patients feel a
bit nauseous and perhaps she has unwittingly dropped her calories from that
drugs' side effects?

I would want to know a bit more before venturing into the wean/don't wean
arena with her. Feel free to e-mail me privately if you don't want to clog
the list.

Warmly,
Rebecca DeYoung Daniels, MBA, RD, LD, IBCLC, RLC & MOM to 5 in KS
