If I have a baby going home on a shield,who is transferring well, the mom is
told to get to the Pediatrician once a week for a weight check or come see
us.  I also have them pumping twice a day as a back up to her milk
production.  Most moms feel twice a day is manageable since these were moms
doing it eight times a day before the shield use.  Only one time did I have a
mom whose baby would not get completely off of the shield.  This mom had
great anatomy.  Baby had great oral anatomy.  But was hooked on the bottle
method and we needed to get her back to the breast. Of course I do believe
she could have tried harder because 50% of the time she nursed without the
shield and 50% of the time she screamed until mom put it on.  This mom
stopped nursing at 91/2 months.
